Festivals
Amsterdam boasts a truly unique array of cultural events surpassing everything one would expect in terms of quality as well as quantity of a city with a population under 800,000. With some 40 museums and 1,600 performances and concerts taking place every month in inumerable theatres and concert halls, art and culture are omnipresent - in churches, former factories and warehouses...even on the grachten (canals)!
Het
Muziektheater
The
Het Muziektheater opera building was designed
by the Austrian architect Wilhelm Holzbauer, and
opened in 1986. It is home to "Het Muziektheater
Ballet" and to "De Nederlandse
Opera". The programme features the very
best of music, theater, ballet and dance performed
by the two in-house companies as well as international
guest ensembles.
Het
Concertgebouw
This
concert hall is home to the world-famous Koninklijk
Concertgebouworkest. Regular concerts by Concertgebouworkest
cover all areas of music from Bach to Stockhausen.
Other reknowned orchestras or newcomer ensembles,
local stars and international youth orchestras
give guest performances.
Holland
Festival June 3 - 26, 2000
The
annual festival, which takes place in June, is
the most famous performing arts festival in the
Netherlands and enjoys international recognition.
Unlike other great European festivals, it concentrates
on the avant-garde and this is why it is so attractive
and so special. The Holland Festival has, for
over 50 years, presented music, theatre, opera,
dance, performances and visual art, with about
35 productions and more than 80 events yearly.
