RESTAURANTS

What comes to the hungry traveller’s mind (or stomach) first when he/she thinks of "Amsterdam"? Cheese and herrings! However this salty North Sea dweller is not always served at its fresh and tasty best. We recommend you try it at the Haringhuis, Oude Doelenstraat 18.

Cheese and nothing but cheese? You would be forgiven for thinking so when you see all the cheese stalls. Top of the list when it comes to quality is Kaasmakers Kef in Marnixstraat 192.

The local Amsterdam cuisine is characterised by the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic mix of the city which means that a stroll round the various eating establishments is like going on a tour of world cuisine. Of course the colonial past has left its mark everywhere, there are many, many "Surinams" and "Batavias", but other nations too have their culinary outposts here.
